Training New GPs Our Practice is approved to train new general practitioners. Occasionally, you may be asked to consent to your consultation being videotaped, to help doctors assess and improve their skills. This is an important part of medical training, but we recognise your right not to take part in this training element. You will be asked by the receptionist if you wish to take part when you arrive for your appointment and your decision will not affect your consultation or treatment in any way. If you agree to being recorded you will be asked to sign a consent form. No intimate examinations will be recorded and the camera will be switched off whenever you wish. All video recordings are made under the rules laid down by the national committee for GP training. The video tape is as confidential as your medical records and will be kept with the same security. The doctor making the recording (or doctor's supervisor) will ensure that the tape is only used for training purposes and that it is erased. The tape is used to assess the doctor's skill in the consultation, to teach the doctor to improve, and for research - all of which help patients to receive better care. The doctors in training are fully qualified and experienced. They normally spend 12 months attached to the Practice and are seen as part of the team.
